THE LIBRARY IS OPEN

For twelve-year-old Jae Han, the library is more than a place to check out books. It's his safe haven. The one place in the world where he can go to escape his unhappy life at home and dive into wondrous stories of magic and mystery. Where he can forget the bullies at school and work on his comic book featuring his drag superhero, Donutella Hamachi. Where he can play video games to better his English and even make friends with the other outcast kids who seek refuge among the shelves.

When Mayor Bob McQueen announces plans to demolish the library and replace it with a parking lot for the new mall across the street, Jae Han is distraught. He pleads with the librarian, Ms. Henny, to explain to the mayor how important the library is to people. To him. Ms. Henny admits that while it breaks her heart, they have no funding to keep the doors open, even if the mayor changed his mind about the parking lot. There's nothing she can do.

Ms. Henny is like a second mom to Jae Han, and he hates seeing her upset. Taking inspiration from the heroes in his books, Jae Han and his ragtag group of friends resolve to act and stop the mayor from destroying their special place. Together, they arrange an art festival at the library to attract new visitors. It's the perfect way to raise funds and make the local community aware of the mayor's intentions. Jae Han even writes a new comic to sell, featuring Donutella Hamachi battling against an evil monster inspired by the mayor called Blob the Drag Thing.

Taking action makes him feel needed and far from the helpless kid he once was. Yet being in charge is new to Jae Han, and pulling off his plans strains the friendships he holds dear and causes a further rift at home. Despite everything, Jae Han knows that time is running out. If he and his friends can't overcome their differences and pull off a successful festival, the library will face its final chapter and close for good.
